Deputy Commissioner Urges Caution as Baglihar HEP Spillway Gates Release High Discharge

The Deputy Commissioner of Ramban took to Twitter this morning to issue an urgent advisory regarding the Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Plant (HEP). Authorities have reported a significant increase in the discharge spillway gates, prompting a release of 2553 cubic meters per second (cumec) of water into the river. The machine discharge has added an additional 800 cumec, bringing the total river discharge to a formidable 3353 cumec, as per sources of The Chenab Times. Citizens have been warned to stay away from riverbanks to ensure their safety.

The Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Plant, located in Ramban district, is a crucial facility that generates electricity through the controlled release of water. The discharge spillway gates are used to regulate water levels in the reservoir and downstream areas, preventing flooding and ensuring a steady supply of electricity. However, due to various factors such as heavy rainfall or a surge in power generation, it becomes necessary to release excess water, leading to the current situation.

Authorities have urged residents living near the riverbanks to exercise extreme caution and stay away from these areas until further notice. The increased river discharge poses a potential risk of flash floods and swift currents, which can be hazardous to life and property.

In a tweet, the Deputy Commissioner emphasized the importance of adhering to safety guidelines and taking necessary precautions. He stated, “ADVISORY – Baglihar HEP. Date 19.07.2023 Time: 07:45 AM Discharge spillway gates = 2553 cumec Machine discharge = 800 cumec Total river discharge =3353 cumec. STAY AWAY FROM RIVERBANKS.”

Local authorities, along with the Baglihar HEP management, are closely monitoring the situation to assess any potential risks and ensure that the water release remains within safe limits. The administration is also in touch with neighboring districts to alert them about the possibility of increased water levels downstream.
