In a significant development, four individuals have been arrested in connection with the horrifying video that went viral, showing two women being paraded naked by a mob in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district. The incident, which occurred following ethnic violence that erupted in the state on May 3, has sparked nationwide outrage.
The video, which surfaced after the internet ban was lifted, exposed the brutal assault on women from one of the warring communities by a mob from the opposing side. Taking immediate action, the Manipur Police registered a case of abduction, gangrape, and murder against unidentified men at the Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district.
One of the arrested individuals, identified as 32-year-old Huirem Herodas Singh from Pechi Awang Lekai in Thoubal district, was prominently seen in the video that emerged on Wednesday. The police have acted swiftly, making arrests within ten hours of the video being brought to light, and 63 days after a zero FIR was registered.
The delay in police action was attributed to the vast number of cases filed related to different incidents, as Manipur has been grappling with escalating violence and unrest. Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh addressed concerns about the delay, assuring the public that a thorough investigation is underway, and strict action will be taken against all the perpetrators, including the possibility of capital punishment.
Notably, the May 18 FIR, which was re-registered on June 21 at Nongpok Sekmai police station for jurisdictional reasons, revealed the brutal extent of the attack. The armed mob not only disrobed, paraded, and allegedly gang-raped one of the survivors but also killed her 56-year-old father and 19-year-old brother during the incident.
In the aftermath of the video going viral, miscreants took matters into their own hands and burnt down the house of the main accused. The incident adds further complexities to an already volatile situation in Manipur, which has witnessed over 150 fatalities and numerous injuries since the eruption of ethnic violence.
