Stampede, Injuries in Manipur Protest Over Army Barricade Removal; Supreme Court Demands Status Report on Arms Recovery

A massive protest in Manipur’s Bishnupur district, involving around 10,000 people demanding the removal of an Army barricade, led to a stampede and injuries to 40 individuals. The confrontation, which lasted throughout the day, escalated as protestors clashed with security forces, resulting in injuries to three soldiers from the Rapid Action Force.

The barricade in question had been placed in a buffer zone straddling the boundaries of Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts, and it faced opposition from Meitei groups, as reported by The Hindu.

The September 6 protest was organized following a call by the influential Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) of Meiteis, reflecting growing discontent over the presence of the Army barricade.

Simultaneously, the Supreme Court of India, in a bid to address the situation in Manipur, has directed the state government and law enforcement agencies operating in the region to provide a status report on the recovery of arms from “all sources.” This directive comes as part of efforts to ensure accountability for the possession of illegal arms within the state.

The bench, consisting of Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, emphasized that they are primarily concerned with accountability, irrespective of the source of wrongdoing. Chief Justice Chandrachud reiterated the court’s commitment to addressing human suffering and the need for disarmament while focusing on accountability.

Meanwhile, Senior Advocate Meenakshi Arora, representing the all-woman judges committee appointed by the Supreme Court to oversee the Manipur violence cases, voiced her objections to the government’s affidavit filed before the court. In the affidavit, the state accused Arora of creating panic by presenting unverified claims about outbreaks of measles and chickenpox, as well as issues related to ration supply in the state. Despite her objections, the bench noted that the comments in the affidavit would not be construed as having been made against the counsel.
