In a troubling incident, two revenue officials, including a naib tehsildar, were allegedly assaulted by police personnel in the scenic hill resort of Sanasar in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district. The incident has since sparked protests by their colleagues and clerical staff, demanding action against the accused police personnel.
Official sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity, reported that the incident occurred late on Tuesday, though senior officials have remained tight-lipped about the specifics. A team led by the Ramban deputy commissioner promptly visited the scene to gather first-hand information.
According to these sources, the naib tehsildar and his subordinate patwari were allegedly roughed up and confined inside their office by an agitated police party, reports Excelsior. The dispute stemmed from the removal of tents on a piece of land claimed by the police. It was revealed that the police had sought the transfer of this land from the revenue department last year. However, their application was rejected, and they were instructed to vacate the parcel. When the police failed to comply with these instructions, revenue department employees took action, seizing the tents and boards installed by the police.
In response to the incident, revenue employees organized a protest outside the deputy commissioner’s office, demanding immediate suspension of the police personnel involved and a high-level inquiry into the matter. The protest gathered momentum as clerical staff from both the deputy commissioner’s office and the revenue department joined the strike.
Harjeet Singh, the chief of the Ramban Patwar Association, expressed the protestors’ grievances, stating, “All clerical staff of the deputy commissioner’s office and the revenue department went on a spontaneous strike and held a protest against the highhandedness of the police.”
