Kashmiri Mediaperson Arrested on Charges of Criminal Conspiracy, Intimidation; Former CM Condemns

In a recent development, Srinagar police have arrested Majid Hyderi, a well-known Kashmiri mediaperson and TV panelist, reportedly on charges of criminal conspiracy, intimidation, extortion, giving false information, and defamation. The arrest was made following the registration of FIR No 88/2023 under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including 120-B, 177, 386, and 500, based on an order issued by the Hon’ble court of JMIC Srinagar.

The arrest took place in the Peerbagh area of central Kashmir’s Srinagar. According to the official statement by the Srinagar police, Mr. Hyderi, son of Jahangir Hyderi, was taken into custody in connection with a range of charges, including criminal conspiracy and intimidation.

The Srinagar police department conveyed this development through their official communication account on X, stating, “FIR No 88/2023 U/S 120-B, 177, 386, 500 of IPC registered in Sadder PS on the basis of an order issued by Hon’ble court of JMIC Srinagar. One Majid Hyderi S/o Jahangir Hyderi R/o Peerbagh arrested for criminal conspiracy, intimidation, extortion, giving false information, defamation, etc.”

However, this arrest has not been without controversy. Former Chief Minister and PDP leader, Mehbooba Mufti, took to X to express her concerns and condemn the arrest. She wrote, “Majid Hyderi’s arrest late last night has exposed the nexus between conmen & certain intelligence agencies. He was dragged from his home like a wanted terrorist without following any legalities. His mother & sister pleaded to see a warrant, but this too was denied. This is how journalists who expose scams are accused of intimidation & defamation.”

In response to PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti’s concerns regarding the arrest of Majid Hyderi, the Srinagar Police issued a statement on their official communication account, addressing the allegations of misconduct during the arrest.

The Srinagar Police emphasized that they had adhered to all legal procedures mandated by law during the formal arrest of Mr. Hyderi. They stated that the family of the arrested individual was clearly informed about the order issued by the Hon’ble court regarding this matter. In their statement, the police urged the public not to succumb to a potential misinformation campaign orchestrated by vested interests.
