Escalating Hate Against Muslims in India Raises Concerns, Says Omar Abdullah

Former Chief Minister and Vice President of the National Conference, Omar Abdullah, has voiced his apprehensions regarding the growing levels of animosity towards Muslims in India, emphasizing that it has become more prevalent in mainstream discourse than ever before. His comments come in the wake of a recent incident where Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ramesh Bidhuri used derogatory language to insult Muslim legislator Danish Ali during a parliamentary session.

The incident unfolded during a discussion in the Lok Sabha on the Chandrayaan-3 mission, when Bidhuri made offensive remarks targeting Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Danish Ali. Referring to Ali as “Katwa Mullah and Aatankwadi,” Bidhuri’s comments were met with shock and outrage from opposition members.

In response to the incident, Omar Abdullah questioned how Muslim members within the saffron party, the BJP, could tolerate such extreme hostility directed at their own community. He raised concerns about the divisive rhetoric and the negative impact it may have on social harmony in the country.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla took the matter seriously and warned Bidhuri of strict action if he repeated such behavior in the future. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed regret for Bidhuri’s remarks, stating, “I express regret if the opposition is hurt by the remarks made by the member,” and requested the removal of the offensive comments from the official record.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra also called on Speaker Om Birla to take action against Bidhuri, challenging him to initiate a privilege motion against her for speaking out against the offensive language. She sought clarification on the actions that would be taken against Bidhuri.

Congress leader Pawan Khera criticized Bidhuri’s conduct in the Lok Sabha, highlighting that he had a better reputation during his time as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in the Delhi Assembly.
