Kho-Kho, a beloved traditional sport in India with roots deeply embedded in its culture, witnessed an exciting display of talent at the Divisional Level U/14 Kho Kho Championship in Doda. In a competition steeped in history and tradition, Udhampur emerged as the triumphant team, clinching the championship trophy in a fiercely contested final match.
The origins of Kho-Kho are shrouded in history, with many historians suggesting it evolved from the ancient game of ‘Run Chase,’ a pursuit-based sport where participants would chase and touch one another. This engaging sport, believed to have originated in Maharashtra, was once played on chariots known as ‘rathera.’ Despite its simplicity and affordability, Kho-Kho demands physical prowess, speed, stamina, and skill. Players engage in thrilling maneuvers, including dodging, feinting, and controlled bursts of speed, making it a captivating spectacle.
Kho-Kho is not just about running; it’s about the pursuit. Catching an opponent through skillful tactics rather than sheer speed is the essence of this game. Beyond physical abilities, Kho-Kho instills values such as obedience, discipline, sportsmanship, and teamwork among its participants, reinforcing the bonds between team members.
The Department of Youth Services and Sports in Jammu and Kashmir provided a platform for the divisional-level Kho Kho tournament, emphasizing the significance of promoting indigenous sports. District Doda, the host of this prestigious event, left no stone unturned in ensuring top-notch facilities and an excellent arena for the competition.
In a riveting semi-final showdown, Doda faced off against Samba, with Doda prevailing with a lead of 8 points. The second semi-final featured Udhampur and Jammu, where Udhampur secured victory with a 7-point lead. The battle for the third-place spot was fiercely contested, as Jammu narrowly edged past Samba in a nail-biting match, claiming the second runner-up position.
In the grand finale, Udhampur showcased their prowess and determination, defeating Doda and lifting the coveted championship trophy. The jubilant occasion saw Jaffar Haider Sheikh, the DYSSO Doda, graciously distributing merit certificates and trophies to the deserving winners, celebrating their dedication to the sport.
