Delhi: In a recent statement, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, reiterated India’s unwavering commitment to the establishment of a “sovereign, independent, and viable” state of Palestine. India’s policy on this matter has remained consistent, emphasizing the importance of direct negotiations for the creation of a sovereign and independent Palestinian state, coexisting peacefully with Israel.
This statement is India’s first public response to the Palestine issue since the outbreak of hostilities between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas, marked by rocket attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his previous addresses, condemned what he referred to as a “terrorist attack” by Hamas on Israel. He expressed solidarity with Israel during these challenging times.
Responding to concerns about the humanitarian situation in Israel and Gaza, Arindam Bagchi highlighted the universal obligation to uphold humanitarian law and stressed the responsibility to combat terrorism in all its forms.
Furthermore, Bagchi mentioned India’s ongoing efforts to evacuate its citizens from Israel as part of ‘Operation Ajay.’ The first flight from Israel carrying Indian citizens back to India was scheduled to land on the day of this announcement. Approximately 18,000 Indians reside in Israel, and the government has urged its citizens in the region to contact the Indian embassy to facilitate their return.
Regarding military assistance to Israel, Bagchi underscored that the primary focus at this moment is the safe repatriation of Indian citizens from Israel. Thus, the Indian government’s immediate priority is ensuring the welfare of its citizens, with no reported casualties among them.
The first flight from Israel, which brought back 230 Indian citizens, is part of India’s broader efforts to rescue its nationals stranded in Israel amid the ongoing conflict. ‘Operation Ajay‘ was initiated by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to address the situation and safeguard Indian citizens in the region.
