Kashmiri Students Charged Under UAPA for Allegedly Raising Pro-Pakistan Slogans During World Cup Final

In a recent development, seven Kashmiri students from the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Kashmir (SKUAST-K) in Ganderbal’s Shuhama are facing charges under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The charges stem from allegations that they raised pro-Pakistan slogans during the Cricket World Cup final, where Australia emerged victorious against India by six wickets in Ahmedabad on November 19.

The case, filed by the Jammu and Kashmir Police in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, invokes Section 13 of the UAPA, which pertains to unlawful activities punishable with imprisonment. Additionally, Sections 505 (inciting to commit any offense against any other class or community) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code have been applied.

The legal action follows a written complaint submitted by a student from Punjab studying at SKUAST-K. The complainant alleges that, after the match concluded, the Kashmiri students verbally abused and targeted him for being a supporter of his country. According to the complaint, the students also issued threats, stating, “shut up, otherwise I would be shooted [sic].” The complaint further claims that the Kashmiri students shouted the slogan “Jeeve Jeeve Pakistan” (Long Live Pakistan), causing fear among students from outside the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

In response to the charges, the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association has urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Lieutenant-Governor Manoj Sinha to reconsider the application of UAPA charges. Nasir Khuehami, the national convenor of the association, expressed concern over the potential impact of these charges on the academic and future careers of the accused students. He emphasized the need for an amicable resolution, denouncing the students’ behavior in the strongest terms.
