Supreme Court Upholds Abrogation of Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir Leaders Express Disappointment

In a significant development, the Supreme Court has upheld the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to the region of Jammu and Kashmir. The decision has sparked disappointment among regional leaders, with some expressing concern over the implications for the relationship between Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of India.

Former Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mehbooba Mufti, labeled the verdict as the “defeat of the idea of India.” She argued that by deeming Article 370 temporary, the court had undermined the longstanding relationship between India and Jammu and Kashmir, declaring it temporary and broken. Mufti conveyed her dismay, stating that the decision was not their defeat but rather the defeat of the concept of India and Gandhi’s vision of Hindustan.

In a cryptic tweet, Omar Abdullah, the National Conference president, hinted that the fight was not over, quoting an Urdu couplet to express resilience. Peoples Conference chairman Sajad Lone also voiced disappointment, asserting that while Article 370 may have been legally obliterated, it would always remain a part of their political aspirations.

Mehbooba Mufti, in a video statement, urged the people of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh not to lose hope, emphasizing that the Supreme Court’s decision was just a temporary stop and not the final destination. She characterized the ruling as detrimental to the idea of India, claiming that by considering Article 370 temporary, the court had weakened the country.

Despite the disappointment, Mufti insisted that the fight would continue and called for unity among the people. Omar Abdullah, under house arrest, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that the verdict was not the end of their struggle. People’s Conference Chairman Sajad Lone expressed disappointment in the decision, stating that justice once again eluded the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

While the Supreme Court’s ruling marks a legal milestone, the discontent expressed by regional leaders highlights the ongoing political complexities surrounding the abrogation of Article 370. The ramifications of this decision will undoubtedly continue to shape the political landscape in the region and prompt further debates on the constitutional status of Jammu and Kashmir within the Indian union.
