In a significant development, the District Doda Police have successfully apprehended two of the most wanted and notorious drug peddlers operating in the region. Surinder Kumar, son of Hans Raj, resident of Chakrabhati Tehsil Bhalla, and Mohd Sohail, also known as Sohail Ganja, son of Mohd Aslam, resident of Saraf Mohalla Bhaderwah, have been booked under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) for their active involvement in illicit drug trafficking.
The Divisional Commissioner Jammu issued the order to detain both individuals, emphasizing the serious threat they posed to society due to their extensive involvement in illicit drug activities. The offenders were allegedly linked to several FIRs registered in different Police Stations of the DKR Range.
Surinder Kumar faced charges in Case FIR No. 76/2021 PS Batote, FIR No. 08/2022 PS Doda, and No. 187/2023 PS Banihal under the relevant provisions of the NDPS Act. Similarly, Mohd Sohail @ Sohail Ganja was implicated in Case FIR No. 87/2023 and FIR No. 162/2023 under the NDPS Act at Police Station Bhaderwah.
These individuals, considered habitual offenders, posed a serious threat to the local youth. The District Police expressed confidence that their detention under the PSA would act as a deterrent to other criminals and drug smugglers still at large, ultimately safeguarding the lives of innocent youths in the locality.
In a broader context, the District Doda Police have taken a tough stance against drug peddlers in the year 2023-24, registering a total of 24 FIRs against 30 offenders. Notably, five notorious drug peddlers have been detained under the PSA (PITNDPS) during this period. Additionally, numerous individuals were taken into preventive custody due to their involvement in drug selling and addiction.
The police authorities have urged the general public to cooperate in their efforts to combat drug-related activities. A stern warning has been issued to potential drug smugglers, emphasizing that engaging in black trading and other criminal activities will lead to stringent legal actions, including detention under PSA and the attachment of property belonging to habitual offenders.
