Pernote Ramban Land Subsidence: A Devastating Event Captured in Art

I am Nida Javaid, an artist with The Chenab Times. The recent landslide in Pernote village, Ramban district, has left a deep impact on all of us in Jammu and Kashmir. As an artist, I felt compelled to respond to this devastating event through my work.

My colored sketch captures the raw emotions and damage caused by the landslide. However, the true story of Pernote is far more complex than what a single image can portray. Here are the ten key points that encapsulate the Pernote tragedy:

  1. Over 500 People Displaced: Pernote village witnessed a large-scale displacement as the ground beneath homes began to sink. Over 500 residents were forced to leave their homes behind.
  2. Mountainside Collapse, Homes Lost: The mountainside succumbed to a massive collapse, leading to the destruction of 74 families’ homes. This event highlights the fragility of life in the face of such natural disasters.
  3. Road and Power Supply Cut Off: The landslide caused a major disruption in infrastructure. The road leading to the Gool sub-division was severed, isolating the area. Additionally, power supply was disrupted, adding to the hardships faced by residents.
  4. Swift Response by NDRF and UTDRF: National and regional disaster response forces, NDRF and UTDRF, reached Pernote village swiftly after the incident. Their prompt action helped in rescue and relief efforts.
  5. Pernote Declared No-Go Zone: As the ground continued to subside, Pernote was declared a no-go zone, prioritizing the safety of residents.
  6. Experts Investigate the Cause: Geological experts are working tirelessly to understand the cause of the landslide. This knowledge is crucial to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
  7. Damage Assessment and Essential Supplies: Teams are assessing the damage caused by the landslide. Ensuring the delivery of essential supplies like food, water, and medicine remains a top priority.
  8. Heavy Rain Threat: Heavy rainfall poses a significant threat of further damage in Pernote. This underlines the need for immediate action and long-term solutions.
  9. Geological Report Guides Recovery: Officials are awaiting a detailed geological report that will guide recovery efforts in Pernote. Understanding the underlying causes is essential for rebuilding the lives of those affected.
  10. Loose Soil and Water Risk Highlighted: The Pernote landslide throws light on the potential dangers posed by loose soil and excessive water in mountainous regions. This knowledge should inform future construction practices and disaster preparedness plans.

Through my artwork, I aim to raise awareness about the Pernote tragedy and the ongoing challenges faced by the displaced families. We, at The Chenab Times, stand in solidarity with the affected people and hope for a swift and complete recovery.
