Arrival
The flight to Kashmir was a smooth and exhilarating experience, filled with anticipation as we neared the region known as “Paradise on Earth.” As the plane descended, the aerial view was breathtaking: snow-capped peaks, lush valleys, and the shimmering waters of Dal Lake. Upon landing at Srinagar Airport, we were warmly welcomed by an acquaintance, who would be our guide throughout our stay.

Stay at the Kashmir University Guest House
Our accommodation was the Kashmir University Guest House, an oasis of tranquility nestled within the campus. The guest house was surrounded by towering chinar trees, their leaves rustling gently in the breeze and shimmering in shades of emerald and gold. As we approached, the melody of birds filled the air, their songs harmonizing perfectly with the gentle symphony of nature. The guest house offered a blend of modern comfort and traditional charm, with large windows providing panoramic views of the lush surroundings. The serene environment was perfect for unwinding after our journey.

An Afternoon at Green Park Harwan
After a brief rest, we set out to explore Green Park Harwan. Located on the outskirts of Srinagar, Harwan is a hidden gem of natural beauty. As we arrived, the crystal-clear water meandered through the park, reflecting the sky and the surrounding greenery. The water was so transparent that I could see the smooth pebbles at the bottom, creating a mesmerizing effect. The park itself was a lush expanse of manicured lawns, vibrant flowerbeds, and majestic trees. Families picnicked on the grass, children played joyfully, and couples strolled hand in hand, soaking in the serene atmosphere.

Evening at the Mughal Gardens
In the evening, we ventured to the famous Mughal Gardens. These gardens are a testament to the rich history and exquisite architecture of the Mughal era. Shalimar Bagh, NishatBagh, and ChashmeShahi were adorned with terraced lawns, cascading fountains, and vibrant flowers. The meticulous layout and intricate designs of the gardens were awe-inspiring, creating a serene and picturesque environment.
As night fell, we couldn’t resist the tempting aromas from roadside barbecue eateries. We found ourselves at a stall where a man was skillfully grilling meat over glowing coals. The smoky, savory flavors were irresistible, and we indulged in succulent kebabs, enjoying the rustic and delicious local cuisine.

Day 2: A Spiritual and Cultural Journey
Friday began with a visit to a nearby mosque for Namaz. The peaceful ambiance of the mosque and the rhythmic prayers created a serene start to the day. After prayers, we made our way to Jamia Masjid, an architectural marvel. The grand mosque, with its splendid wooden architecture and intricate carvings, was surrounded by bustling shops. The courtyard, with its tall minarets and vast prayer hall, exuded an aura of tranquility and reverence.

In the afternoon, we experienced the quintessential Kashmiri activity of riding in a shikara on Dal Lake. The gentle sway of the boat, the reflection of the mountains in the water, and the vibrant floating markets created a magical experience. As evening approached, I found myself meandering along the edge of Dal Lake, captivated by the serene beauty and the golden hues of the setting sun.
Day 3: Exploring Gulmarg and Heritage Sites
The third day began with a trip to Gulmarg, known for its stunning landscapes and ski resorts. We navigated through the labyrinth of trails and stood atop the peaks, taking in the panoramic views of the snow-covered mountains and lush valleys below. The beauty of Gulmarg was truly unparalleled.

Next, we visited the Maharaja Palace, a splendid example of royal architecture. The palace, with its grand halls, ornate decorations, and stunning gardens, offered a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the former rulers. In the evening, we explored Lal Chowk, the bustling heart of Srinagar. The vibrant marketplace, with its array of shops and street vendors, was a lively and colorful experience.
Day 4: Discovering Dachigam
On our final day, we visited Dachigam National Park, a haven for wildlife and natural beauty. The park, with its diverse flora and fauna, pristine streams, and majestic mountains, was a nature lover’s paradise. As we hiked through the park, my father recalled the famous statement, “Gar firdaus bar rue zamin’ast, hamin’ast o hamin’ast o hamin’ast,” which translates to, “If there is a paradise on earth, it is this, it is this, it is this.”

The last day ended with more shopping at Lal Chowk, where we immersed ourselves in the vibrant local culture and picked up a few more treasures to remember our journey by.
