Eid al-Adha, also known as Bakrid, is a significant Islamic festival where Muslims around the world perform Qurbani (sacrifice) to commemorate the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command. This act of devotion involves the slaughtering of animals such as goats, sheep, and cows, followed by the distribution of the meat among family, friends, and the less fortunate. However, recent reports and social media posts have highlighted concerns about the improper disposal of animal remains in various parts of India. This article delves into what Islamic teachings prescribe regarding the disposal of Qurbani remains and examines where some Muslims may have gone wrong in their practices.
Islamic Teachings on Cleanliness and Respectful Disposal
Islam places a strong emphasis on cleanliness (taharah) and respectful treatment of animals, including their remains after sacrifice. Here are some foundational principles:
- Cleanliness (Taharah):
- The Qur’an repeatedly emphasizes the importance of cleanliness: “Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:222).
- The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Cleanliness is half of faith” (Sahih Muslim). This hadith underscores the significance of maintaining hygiene in all aspects of life, including during and after Qurbani.
- Respect for Animal Remains:
- The act of Qurbani is performed with the intention of gaining Allah’s pleasure, and it is crucial to handle the animal and its remains with respect. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) instructed: “Verily, Allah has prescribed excellence in all things. Thus, if you kill, kill in a good manner; if you slaughter, slaughter in a good manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife and spare suffering to the animal he slaughters” (Sahih Muslim).
- Proper disposal involves ensuring that the remains do not cause harm, disrespect, or pollution. This typically means burying the remains or disposing of them in a manner that adheres to local health and sanitation regulations.
- Environmental Responsibility:
- The Qur’an instructs believers not to cause corruption on the earth: “And do not cause corruption upon the earth after its reformation” (Surah Al-A’raf, 7:56). Improper disposal of animal remains can lead to environmental pollution and public health issues, which is against Islamic teachings.
Contemporary Practices and Issues
Despite these clear guidelines, reports from various parts of India have indicated that some Muslims have disposed of the remains of Qurbani animals inappropriately, leading to public outrage and criticism. Instances of animal heads, bones, and offal being dumped in garbage heaps or public places have sparked concern among both Muslim and non-Muslim communities, claims social media posts. However, most of these posts include old videos or images, and most of the critics on this issue are from the right wing. Whether the posts are true or false is a matter of verification, but what religion teaches and what followers do can differ. Followers of a religion can make mistakes due to their limited knowledge of it. We still suppose that some who do the wrong thing should be aware of what their religion actually teaches.
Reasons for Improper Disposal:
- Lack of Awareness: Some individuals may not be fully aware of the Islamic guidelines on proper disposal of animal remains. This can lead to negligent practices that contradict Islamic principles.
- Insufficient Facilities: In some areas, there may be a lack of adequate facilities for the proper disposal of animal remains. This can force people to resort to inappropriate methods.
- Neglect and Indifference: Unfortunately, some people may disregard the importance of cleanliness and respectful disposal due to carelessness or indifference.
Addressing the Issue
To rectify this situation and ensure adherence to Islamic principles, the following measures can be undertaken:
- Education and Awareness:
- Community Outreach: Religious leaders and scholars should emphasize the importance of proper disposal during sermons and community meetings.
- Educational Campaigns: Distribute pamphlets, use social media, and organize workshops to educate the community about the correct methods of disposal.
- Provision of Facilities:
- Government and Community Cooperation: Collaborate with local authorities to ensure that adequate disposal facilities are available, especially during Eid al-Adha.
- Designated Disposal Sites: Establish designated areas where remains can be buried or processed safely and hygienically.
- Encouraging Responsibility:
- Community Initiatives: Encourage community groups to take collective responsibility for cleanliness. Organize clean-up drives and ensure proper supervision during the Qurbani process.
- Personal Accountability: Emphasize that each individual is responsible for ensuring their actions do not harm others or the environment.
Conclusion
Islam’s teachings on cleanliness, respect for animals, and environmental responsibility are clear and unambiguous. The improper disposal of Qurbani animal remains observed in some areas not only contravenes these principles but also tarnishes the image of the Muslim community. By promoting awareness, providing necessary facilities, and encouraging personal and communal responsibility, Muslims can ensure that their practices align with their faith’s teachings, thus upholding the sanctity and spirit of Eid al-Adha.
