In a strategic move ahead of the highly anticipated Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, the Congress and its INDIA bloc ally, the National Conference (NC), on Monday finalized a seat-sharing arrangement. The alliance is seen as a critical step to present a united front against the BJP’s growing influence in the region.
Under the agreement, the National Conference will contest 51 seats, Congress will field candidates in 32 seats, and a “friendly but disciplined contest” will be held on five constituencies. The alliance also allocated one seat to the CPI(M) and another to the Panthers Party, completing the 90-member assembly arrangement.
The announcement was made by J&K Congress chief Tariq Hameed Karra, who emphasized that the collaboration is designed to counter attempts by the BJP to alter the region’s identity. “The BJP is trying to destroy the soul of Jammu and Kashmir. Our INDIA alliance’s main objective is to save it. This is why Congress and National Conference are coming together to make a government that aligns with the aspirations of the people,” said Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal.
Farooq Abdullah, president of the National Conference and a former J&K Chief Minister, expressed optimism over the alliance’s potential. “We are coming together to fight those forces trying to divide the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The whole INDIA alliance was formed to counter such forces on a national scale. The coordination between Congress and NC was done in a cordial manner,” Abdullah remarked.
The “Friendly Contest” on 5 Seats: A Weak Link?
While the alliance aims to project unity, the decision to allow a “friendly contest” on five seats raises eyebrows. Political analysts suggest that these internal contests could inadvertently benefit the BJP by dividing anti-BJP votes, thereby weakening the alliance’s effectiveness in those constituencies. In such closely contested elections, even minor splits in the opposition’s vote share can tilt the balance in favor of the BJP.
Critics argue that a truly cohesive alliance should have ensured a straightforward division of seats without internal competition. The “friendly contest” approach risks creating confusion among voters and could reflect deeper underlying tensions between Congress and NC. While both parties have downplayed this aspect, the BJP could capitalize on this perceived lack of full coordination by highlighting the fragmented nature of the opposition.
BJP’s Potential Gains Amid Alliance’s Soft Spots
The BJP has a history of exploiting divisions within rival alliances, and the situation in Jammu and Kashmir could be no different. The party’s strategic messaging is expected to target these so-called “friendly contests,” framing them as evidence of internal disunity within the INDIA alliance. With a campaign likely centered around national security, stability, and development, the BJP could use these rifts to strengthen its position, especially in regions where it already has a foothold.
While the Congress-NC alliance sets the stage for a strong contest, the decision to leave room for intra-alliance competition could become a significant talking point in the days leading up to the elections. Whether this move helps consolidate votes or leads to unexpected gains for the BJP remains to be seen. The real test of the alliance’s effectiveness will come when voters head to the polls.
