SRINAGAR, Nov 19 – Senior People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader and legislator Waheed-ur-Rehman Para on Tuesday criticized the Omar Abdullah-led National Conference (NC) government for what he described as a lack of clarity on critical issues facing Jammu and Kashmir, including Article 370.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting chaired by PDP President Mehbooba Mufti, Para accused the NC of engaging in “inconsistent rhetoric” and failing to address “core concerns” such as the special status under Article 35A and the demographic challenges of the region.
“Omar Abdullah talks about statehood but avoids addressing the core issue of Article 370. Their approach is inconsistent rhetoric on roads but silence where it matters most,” Para said.
The meeting, which followed Jammu and Kashmir’s first assembly session in six years, discussed key issues including the region’s political vacuum, the abrogation of Article 370, and the performance of PDP legislators, according to Para.
Para stressed the importance of normalizing politics in the region, lamenting the absence of meaningful dialogue by the NC on crucial matters. “Today’s meeting focused on bridging the political void and addressing the emotional and demographic concerns that resonate deeply with the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he added.
The PDP leader called for concrete actions to address the challenges posed by the abrogation of Article 370 and restore Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. He criticized what he referred to as the NC government’s reliance on “photo-ops, review meetings, and visits to Delhi” rather than substantive measures.
“We are not here to confront the government, but we will ensure they deliver on their promises and mandates,” Para said, reiterating PDP’s commitment to holding the NC accountable for the promises made to voters.
He further clarified that the PDP is not opposed to the National Conference but expects it to fulfill its electoral agenda. “We are not against NC, but they need to raise these issues in the proper forums, not just on roads,” Para said.
