NDA Scores Big in Maharashtra; INDIA Alliance Retains Jharkhan

Mumbai/Ranchi, Nov 23 – The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) delivered a commanding performance in Maharashtra, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) poised to win 130 seats, solidifying its position as the state’s largest party. Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-Congress coalition defied exit polls, securing a second straight term in power.

Maharashtra: A Decisive Mandate

The ruling Mahayuti alliance, comprising the BJP, Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) faction, and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, surpassed the majority threshold of 145, winning 231 seats in the 288-member Assembly and leading on two others as of late Thursday. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), consisting of the Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and Sharad Pawar’s NCP faction, secured only 49 seats in a resounding defeat.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar attributed their success to the women-centric Ladki Bahin Yojana, which they called a “game changer.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a victory rally at BJP headquarters, hailed the results as a triumph of “development, good governance, and social justice.”

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut rejected the outcome, alleging election rigging. “This is not the decision of the people of Maharashtra. If the MVA cannot win 75 seats, it means the results have been manipulated,” Raut said.

Key individual contests saw victories for Eknath Shinde in Kopri-Pachpakhadi, Devendra Fadnavis in Nagpur South West, and Ajit Pawar in Baramati. Opposition leaders Aaditya Thackeray and Congress state president Nana Patole also won their constituencies, Worli and Sakoli, respectively.

Jharkhand: JMM Secures Second Term

In Jharkhand, the JMM-Congress coalition retained power with 56 seats in the 81-member Assembly, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 41. Hemant Soren’s JMM claimed 24 seats, while the Congress won 16.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren secured victory in Barhait, while his wife, Kalpana Soren, won in Gandey. BJP state chief Babulal Marandi led in Dhanwar, while former Chief Minister Champai Soren, who recently joined the BJP, won in Seraikela.

Wayanad and Nanded Bypolls: Congress Gains

In the Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made her electoral debut, securing a landslide victory with a margin of over 400,000 votes. In Maharashtra’s Nanded bypoll, Congress candidate Chavan Ravindra Vasantrao emerged victorious.

Bypoll Highlights Across States

Results for 48 Assembly bypolls across 13 states and two parliamentary constituencies further cemented BJP’s dominance, although regional players also made gains.
