Marc Cherry Explores Potential Desperate Housewives Spinoff, Considers 1960s Setting

LOS ANGELES – Marc Cherry, the creator of the Emmy-winning television series Desperate Housewives, revealed he has ideas for a potential spinoff of the iconic show, including setting it in an earlier decade. Cherry shared his thoughts in a recent interview with People, where he reflected on the enduring appeal of Wisteria Lane, the fictional street that served as the heart of the series.

“I would probably want to do the idea maybe in an earlier decade,” said Cherry. “The character I miss writing the most is actually Wisteria Lane. That was the most fun playground anyone in the history of television has ever had, because we owned the whole street.”

Desperate Housewives, which aired on ABC for eight seasons from 2004 to 2012, followed the lives of the residents of Wisteria Lane in the fictional town of Fairview. The show starred Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, and Eva Longoria, among others, and won critical acclaim and multiple awards.

Cherry, who has fielded countless requests for a reboot, said he has toyed with the idea of reimagining the neighborhood in a different era, such as the 1960s. However, he emphasized the importance of ensuring that any revival has a meaningful purpose.

“If you do a reboot, you have to have a really good artistic reason to do it,” Cherry said. “At some point, I’ll sit down with someone and go, ‘Okay, let’s talk about if there’s a good enough ‘why’ to do it.’”

Cherry also spoke fondly of his cast and crew, highlighting the enduring relationships he maintains with many of the actors. He noted recent reunions with cast members, including Felicity Huffman and Marcia Cross, and praised the ensemble for bringing the show’s complex characters to life.

“You can write a really great script, but unless you get the right actors to say the words correctly, it doesn’t make much of a difference,” he said. “I lucked out with the cast. The casting gods were with me.”

Reflecting on his time creating the series, Cherry said he has gained a deeper understanding of what made Desperate Housewives successful and believes he could bring that experience to any potential future project.

“I feel like if I ever got a chance to do that show again, I’d be better at the job,” he said. “I learned so much.”

While Cherry has yet to confirm any concrete plans for a spinoff or reboot, his remarks suggest that Wisteria Lane may still have untold stories to share, possibly through a fresh lens rooted in another era.
