Truck Driver Arrested in Jammu for Alleged Poppy Smuggling

Udhampur, 2 Dec – Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir arrested a truck driver on Monday for allegedly smuggling over 200 kilograms of poppy in the Udhampur district, officials reported.

Police said the arrest followed a routine check conducted on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway at Jakhani, where a truck was intercepted. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered 211 kilograms of poppy concealed in eight bags.

The driver, identified as Mohammad Hanief, was taken into custody on the spot. Law enforcement officials seized the vehicle along with the contraband.

A case has been filed at Udhampur Police Station, and an investigation into the matter is ongoing.

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, a crucial route connecting the region, has seen periodic instances of contraband trafficking. Authorities have intensified surveillance and checks along the route to curb illegal activities.
