NC Leader Urges Reinstatement of December 5 Public Holiday to Honor Sheikh Abdullah

SRINAGAR, Dec 4 – National Conference (NC) General Secretary and Khanyar MLA Ali Mohammad Sagar on Tuesday called on Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to reinstate December 5 as a public holiday to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, the former Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and founder of the NC.

Sagar, in a statement, described Sheikh Abdullah—widely known as “Sher-e-Kashmir”—as a transformative leader whose contributions reshaped the social and political landscape of the region. He hailed Sheikh Abdullah’s role in ending decades of despotic rule and championing democratic rights and social justice for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Sher-e-Kashmir was a bulwark against the tides of despair, championing the cause of dignity, democratic rights, and social justice,” Sagar said. He added that Sheikh Abdullah’s sacrifices were instrumental in ushering in a new era of empowerment and hope for the region.

Sagar argued that reinstating the public holiday would not only honor Sheikh Abdullah’s legacy but also serve as a tribute to the broader sacrifices made by the people in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting social justice in Jammu and Kashmir.

The NC leader also highlighted the party’s continued relevance in the region, referencing its performance in the recently concluded elections. According to him, the party’s enduring connection with the people underscores the importance of commemorating Sheikh Abdullah’s vision and legacy.

The birth anniversary of Sheikh Abdullah, celebrated annually on December 5, was previously a public holiday in Jammu and Kashmir but was removed after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, which stripped the region of its special status.

The NC’s demand for the reinstatement of the holiday has added to the ongoing discourse about preserving the legacy of prominent leaders in Jammu and Kashmir’s history.
