Jammu, Dec 14 – Ministry of Home Affairs has approved a subsidized helicopter service to connect Jammu with the remote Mendhar sector in Poonch district, marking a significant step in improving connectivity for underserved regions in Jammu and Kashmir.
The new service, approved in response to a proposal from the Union Territory’s Civil Aviation Department, will operate on two routes: Jammu-Poonch-Mendhar and Jammu-Mendhar-Jammu. The ministry confirmed in an official communication that the UT administration can claim subsidies within the approved budget allocation.
“This initiative will address long-standing accessibility challenges for residents of remote areas like Mendhar,” said Mohammad Aijaz Asad, Secretary of Civil Aviation for Jammu and Kashmir. He emphasized the service’s potential to enhance infrastructure, provide convenience, and support emergency evacuations in the region.
The rugged terrain and harsh winters of the Mendhar sector have historically posed significant obstacles to connectivity. The new helicopter service is expected to mitigate these challenges, offering a faster and more reliable mode of transportation.
“This development will greatly benefit commuters and improve access to medical facilities during emergencies,” Asad noted, adding that the service could also contribute to the promotion of border tourism in the future.
Subsidized helicopter services have already been operational in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir, including routes connecting Kishtwar, Rajouri, Poonch, Doda, Kupwara, and Bandipora.
The addition of the Jammu-Mendhar route underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing mobility and economic opportunities in the region, particularly for residents of remote and mountainous areas.
