Death Toll in California Fires Rises to 16: Five New Fatalities Reported in Eaton Fire

Los Angeles, January 12 – The County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner (DME) announced five additional deaths related to the Eaton Fire on Saturday evening, bringing the combined death toll of the Palisades and Eaton fires to 16.

Within just four days of these devastating fires, 11 fatalities have been attributed to the Eaton Fire and five to the Palisades Fire. The latest five deaths reported by the DME remain under investigation, and official confirmation of human remains is pending further examination at the facility.

Locations of Newly Reported Fatalities

The DME disclosed that two of the five recent fatalities were discovered on January 10 in Altadena. One victim was found in the 800 block of East Sacramento Street, while another was recovered in the 100 block of West Terrace Street. Both bodies are currently at the DME’s facility as of 6 p.m. Saturday.

The other three fatalities were uncovered on January 11, also in Altadena. They were found in the 3000 block of Krenz Avenue, the 200 block of Wapello Street, and the 30 block of West Pine Street. The remains of these victims are still awaiting transport to the DME.

Of the 16 fatalities, only one individual has been publicly identified thus far: Victor Shaw, a 66-year-old resident who died trying to defend his family home from the Eaton Fire. According to loved ones, Shaw had a hose in his hand, battling the flames in an effort to save the house that had been in his family for over five decades.

Investigation and Community Impact

The tragic losses have sent shockwaves through affected communities, as investigators continue to assess the causes and extent of damage from the fires. Authorities urge residents to adhere to evacuation orders and prioritize their safety in light of ongoing threats from fire conditions.

The Palisades and Eaton fires, which broke out earlier this week, have ravaged large swaths of Los Angeles County, prompting widespread evacuations and firefighting efforts. More updates on the fatalities and response efforts are expected as investigations proceed.
