Six individuals from Thathri, Kishtwar, and surrounding areas have been arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir Police in connection with two theft cases involving hardware and kiryana (grocery) items. The stolen property, valued at Rs 5 lakh, was recovered from multiple locations following a detailed investigation by the Kishtwar Police.
As per information obtained by The Chenab Times, the first theft was reported on January 7 by Mohd Farooq, proprietor of M/s Shalimar Glass House, who lodged a complaint about the theft of geysers and other hardware from his store. In response, FIR No. 09/2025 under sections 305 and 331(4) of the BNS Act was registered. Days later, on January 11, Raman Gupta, a resident of Shakti Nagar, Kishtwar, reported the theft of kiryana items from his shop. Police registered FIR No. 14/2025 under similar sections and began probing the incidents.
A special investigation team, led by Inspector Firdous Ahmed, SHO of Kishtwar Police Station, and supervised by Deputy Superintendent of Police Dr. Ishan Gupta, was constituted under the direction of Senior Superintendent of Police Javaid Iqbal Mir. Utilizing a combination of technical surveillance and field intelligence, the team identified the prime suspect, Rahul Singh, a resident of Kuleed Chowk, Kishtwar.
Following Singh’s arrest, five additional suspects were detained. They were identified as Abdul Hamid from Melan, Kishtwar; Mohd Rafi from Dhar, now residing in Drabshalla, Kishtwar; Abhishek Mahajan from Udhampur, temporarily staying in Thathri, Doda; Irshad Ahmed from Thathri Market, Doda; and Rajesh Kumar Gupta from Kandani, Kishtwar. Upon interrogation, all six confessed to their involvement in the thefts and provided details about where the stolen items were concealed. Acting on this information, the police recovered the stolen property.
Senior Superintendent of Police Javaid Iqbal Mir praised the investigation team for their swift action and warned against illegal activities in the district. “Kishtwar Police will leave no stone unturned to bring offenders to justice. Those engaging in theft, sabotage, or other illegal activities will face the full force of the law,” he stated.
The arrests and recoveries have been seen as a major step in addressing theft-related crimes in the region, reinforcing public confidence in law enforcement efforts.
