SRINAGAR, Feb 11 – A legislator from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Jammu and Kashmir has introduced a Private Member’s Bill seeking a complete ban on liquor across the Union Territory, citing concerns over rising alcohol consumption.
Fayaz Ahmad Mir, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Kupwara, has submitted the bill for discussion in the upcoming budget session of the J&K Assembly. The proposed legislation calls for a prohibition on the advertisement, sale, purchase, consumption, and manufacture of alcoholic beverages.
Mir warned that increasing alcohol consumption posed a significant threat to society, advocating for stringent legal measures to address the issue. The bill includes provisions for harsh penalties, including imprisonment and fines, for those found violating the proposed law.
This is not the first attempt to push for prohibition in the region. In July 2024, National Conference (NC) Lok Sabha member from Srinagar, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, had considered introducing a similar private member’s bill in the Indian Parliament, aimed at banning liquor and intoxicants in Jammu and Kashmir.
If passed, the bill would mark a significant policy shift in the Union Territory, where liquor sales are currently regulated but not prohibited. The proposal comes amid ongoing debates over the social and economic implications of alcohol consumption in the region.
