SRINAGAR, March 17 – A militant was killed in a gunfight with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Monday morning, police sources said.
A joint team comprising the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Indian Army launched a cordon-and-search operation in Krumhoora village of Zachaldara, Handwara, following intelligence inputs about the presence of militants, they said.
“As the forces carried out searches, the militants opened fire, triggering an encounter,” a police official told Reuters on condition of anonymity. Security personnel returned fire, and one militant was killed in the exchange, the official added.
The Kashmir Zone Police confirmed the incident on social media platform X, stating, “Encounter has started at Krumhoora Zachaldara area of Handwara. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow.”
There was no immediate confirmation on the identity or affiliation of the slain militant. Security forces suspect that at least one more militant may be present in the area, and a search operation remains ongoing, the sources said.
Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a decades-long insurgency against Indian rule, with security operations frequently targeting armed groups operating in the region. India accuses Pakistan of supporting militant groups, a charge Islamabad denies, asserting that it provides only diplomatic and moral support to Kashmiris seeking self-determination.
