Srinagar, March 20 – A senior leader of India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former legislator, Faqeer Mohammad Khan, was found dead at his official residence in Srinagar on Thursday, with authorities suspecting suicide as the cause.
Khan, who previously represented the Gurez constituency, was discovered in a pool of blood at his home in the Tulsi Bagh area, according to officials. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead en route, the officials said, speaking to the Kashmir Bulletin news agency.
Police are investigating the incident, though preliminary findings suggest it was a “classic case of suicide,” the officials added. No further details were provided as the investigation continues.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his condolences, describing Khan as “a true grassroots leader.” In a post on X, Abdullah’s office wrote, “Deeply saddened by the passing of former legislator Faqeer Mohd Khan. My heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace.” The state assembly observed a two-minute silence in Khan’s honor, sources said.
Khan’s death has sent shockwaves through political circles in Jammu and Kashmir, where he was regarded as an influential figure within the BJP. Further updates are awaited as authorities complete their inquiry.
