SRINAGAR, March 24 – Cyber Police in Srinagar have launched legal action against individuals accused of misusing social media to promote militancy, radicalize youth, and spread anti-national propaganda, a police spokesperson said on Monday.
The crackdown follows a cyber surveillance operation that identified eight individuals operating social media accounts posting content deemed to glorify militancy and extremist ideologies, according to a statement released by the Cyber Police Srinagar, as reported by the Kashmir Bulletin news agency.
“Following thorough investigations, all eight individuals were detained for questioning,” the spokesperson said. Security proceedings have been initiated against four of them, identified as Sajad Ahmad Lone from Herpora Parigam in Kulgam district, Zuhaib Zahoor from Brein Nishat in Srinagar, Abrar Mushtaq from Nawabazar in Srinagar, and Farhad Rasool from Chek Dara in Harwan, Srinagar.
In addition, four juveniles found engaging in similar activities were counseled and released to their parents, the spokesperson added. “They will remain under close surveillance to ensure compliance,” the statement noted.
The Cyber Police emphasized their ongoing efforts to monitor social media platforms for content that incites violence, promotes secessionist ideologies, or threatens public order. “Any attempt to glorify militancy or spread misinformation against national integrity will face strict legal consequences,” the spokesperson warned.
Authorities urged social media users to act responsibly and refrain from violating legal and ethical standards, promising stringent action, including prosecution, against offenders. “Cyber Police Srinagar remains committed to maintaining a safe and lawful cyberspace,” the statement concluded, calling on netizens to adhere to the law.
