Three Civilians Killed in Cross-Border Shelling Following India’s Retaliatory Strikes in Pakistan

JAMMU – Three civilians were killed in overnight shelling as cross-border tensions escalated between India and Pakistan, following Indian precision strikes on alleged terrorist infrastructure across the border.

The Indian Army said the Pakistan Army initiated unprovoked firing and artillery shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border opposite Jammu and Kashmir during the night of May 6-7. “Three innocent civilians lost their lives in indiscriminate firing/shelling,” the Indian Army stated, adding that Indian forces responded in a “proportionate manner”, according to news agency ANI.

The exchange of fire came hours after India launched “Operation Sindoor”, a series of coordinated strikes on targets in Pakistan’s Punjab and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), including known militant strongholds in Muridke, Bahawalpur, Kotli, and Muzaffarabad. Indian officials said the operation was a measured response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 people, including two Navy and Intelligence Bureau officers.

India’s Ministry of Defence described the strikes as “precise and restrained”, emphasizing that Pakistani military installations were not targeted. “This operation underscores India’s resolve to hold perpetrators accountable while avoiding unnecessary provocation,” the statement said.

All three branches of India’s armed forces participated in the strikes, which reportedly targeted nine terrorist bases linked to groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.

Pakistan, in turn, closed several key airports for 48 hours and has restricted Indian civilian flights from using its airspace. India also suspended civilian flights from Srinagar airport on Wednesday.

Tensions remain high along the LoC, with Indian authorities monitoring the situation closely. There has been no official response from Islamabad regarding the overnight civilian casualties in Jammu and Kashmir.
