In response to the ongoing heatwave across the Kashmir Valley, Jammu and Kashmir’s Education Minister, Sakina Itoo, on Saturday announced an early summer break for all private and government schools in the Kashmir division, beginning June 23.
Speaking to media in Srinagar, Minister Itoo said, “The weather conditions in the Kashmir region have become unbearable for students. In view of the severe heatwave, we have decided to announce early summer vacations starting June 23.”
The summer vacation will last for 15 days, with the government scheduled to reassess the weather conditions upon its conclusion. Based on the review, a decision on any possible extension will be taken accordingly.
Initially, the education department had proposed summer holidays from July 1 to July 10. However, the schedule has been advanced and extended due to the intensifying heatwave.
“We understand the difficulty students are facing under such extreme weather. Hence, the decision to reschedule and extend the vacation period was taken to ensure their well-being,” the minister added.
Earlier in the day, the Education Minister also revised school timings in view of rising temperatures. As per the new order, schools within the Srinagar Municipal limits will operate from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Meanwhile, schools located outside the municipal limits will follow timings from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM.
Meanwhile, students and parents in the Jammu division and winter zone areas of Jammu—particularly the Chenab Valley—are eagerly awaiting a similar announcement. With temperatures rising across these regions as well, there is growing anticipation for the declaration of summer vacations.
