Seven sheep perish in landslide at Kuddi Paddar

Kishtwar, August 11 — Seven livestock belonging to the Government Sheep Breeding Farm, Thathri, were killed in a sudden landslide at Highland Kuddi in Paddar area of Kishtwar district on Tuesday (Aug 5) afternoon.

According to the First Information Report lodged by Dr. Ishfaq Majeed Lone, Veterinary Assistant Surgeon, the incident occurred at around 12.30 p.m. on August 5, when heavy sliding of rocks struck the pasture where the departmental animals were grazing. Despite precautionary measures, seven government-owned animals — one adult ewe (brand no. 10-U 163), three male weaners (tag nos. 13053, 13055, 13057), and three female weaners (tag nos. 811, 862, 858) — were killed.

Dr. Lone conducted the post-mortem examinations on spot and filed the FIR at the nearby police post in Machail, Paddar, following the directions of Dr. Azhar Moomin Bichoo, Assistant Director, Government Sheep Breeding Farm, Thathri.

Dr. Bichoo immediately travelled to Kuddi after the incident, assessed the situation, and inspected the landslide-affected area. He instructed the staff deployed at Kuddi to move the remaining livestock to safer meadows and to remain vigilant to avoid such natural disasters in the future.

Speaking to The Chenab Times, Dr. Bichoo said, “We have instructed our field staff to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to avoid such losses in future, particularly during the monsoon season when the risk of landslides is heightened.”

Officials attributed the landslide to recent heavy rainfall in the region. The Sheep Husbandry Department has initiated steps to monitor vulnerable grazing sites in Paddar and adjoining areas to minimise future risks.
