Gaza, Aug 19 – Hamas has agreed to an Egyptian proposal for a ceasefire and prisoner exchange, according to statements from the movement and details reported by regional and international media.
The proposal includes a 60-day truce during which Israeli forces would withdraw 800 meters from residential areas in Gaza and daily aid deliveries would rise to 600 trucks. The plan also calls for the release of 1,700 Palestinian detainees, including 1,500 from Gaza, in exchange for Israeli hostages.
Senior Hamas official Basem Naim confirmed in a statement on Facebook that the group has handed over its approval to the mediators. Sources told Quds News Network that Hamas has already informed Egyptian and Qatari mediators of its acceptance. The Chenab Times learned that the movement is now waiting for an official Israeli response.
Israeli Channel 12 reported that Israel has formally received Hamas’ response. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a video message quoted by Sky News, said: “I, like you, hear the reports in the media, and from them you can get one impression – Hamas is under immense pressure.”
According to officials cited by Sky News, the ceasefire plan includes a path toward a comprehensive agreement to end the war. It also outlines increased humanitarian access and a phased exchange of Palestinian prisoners for Israeli hostages.
If accepted, the agreement could represent a significant step toward halting the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has killed more than 61,944 Palestinians, injured over 155,886, and displaced hundreds of thousands after more than nine months of hostilities.
