Gaza, August 24 — At least 63 Palestinians were killed in Israeli military operations across Gaza on Saturday, with Israeli forces intensifying their ground offensive in Gaza City’s Sabra neighborhood, medical sources reported to Al Jazeera. The attacks are part of Israel’s ongoing effort to seize the city and displace approximately one million residents.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, Israeli tanks advanced into Sabra, near the besieged Zeitoun neighborhood, which has faced increased military targeting over the past week. A source at al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City confirmed that a child was among those killed in the latest bombardment of Sabra. Additionally, Israeli artillery struck tents housing displaced families in the Asdaa area northwest of Khan Younis, killing 16 people, including six children, medical sources said.
Throughout Saturday, at least 22 Palestinians seeking humanitarian aid were killed, including one shot dead near a distribution point southeast of Khan Younis and another near the Israeli-controlled Netzarim Corridor, according to Al Jazeera.
The United Nations officially declared a famine in Gaza on Friday, marking the first such designation in the Middle East. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) reported that 514,000 people—nearly a quarter of Gaza’s population—are experiencing famine, with projections indicating the number could rise to 641,000 by September’s end. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the famine a “man-made disaster,” accusing Israel of systematically obstructing aid deliveries.
Palestinian health authorities reported on Saturday that eight more Palestinians, including two children, died from malnutrition in the past 24 hours, bringing the total starvation-related deaths to 281 since the conflict escalated nearly two years ago. “The famine is silently ravaging the bodies of civilians,” said Munir al-Bursh, director-general of Gaza’s Health Ministry, in a social media post.
The Palestinian Health Ministry described the famine declaration as belated but appreciated, stating on Telegram, “The engineering of starvation is one aspect of the chapters of genocide, which also include the systematic destruction of the health sector and mass killing.”
Since May 27, Israel has implemented a unilateral aid delivery mechanism through the so-called GHF, supported by Israel and the United States. The UN and major relief groups have rejected this system as illegitimate, citing violations of humanitarian principles. Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that over 2,076 Palestinians have been killed and 15,300 wounded while seeking aid since the GHF’s introduction.
Israel’s military campaign, launched after the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel in October 2023, has resulted in over 62,600 Palestinian deaths in Gaza, according to local health authorities.
