All Schools in Jammu Division Closed Until August 30 Due to Heavy Rainfall

JAMMU, August 28 — The Directorate of School Education Jammu has ordered the closure of all government and private schools across Jammu Division until August 30, 2025, due to ongoing heavy rainfall and related safety concerns.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the decision follows reports of severe waterlogging, flooding in low-lying areas, landslides, and damaged roads in districts including Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Reasi, Udhampur, Doda, and Kishtwar. The order, issued by Director School Education Dr. Naseem Javaid Chowdhary, cites heightened risks to students and staff, particularly in hilly regions, and responds to requests from parents and civil society for continued closures. Heads of Institutions (HoIs) are advised to explore online classes for students in Classes 9 to 12 where feasible and ensure safety inspections before reopening. Note that August 31, a Sunday, is already a non-school day.

The directive, effective immediately, mandates strict compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) outlined in a circular dated August 20, 2025. These include regular safety checks of school premises, avoiding student gatherings in hazardous areas during storms, and maintaining emergency contact with parents. Schools near water bodies must identify evacuation routes during heavy rain or flood warnings.

The Chenab Times learned that the situation is being monitored, with further updates to be issued based on weather conditions.
