Israel Claims Killing of Hamas Spokesman Amid Gaza City Offensive

GAZA CITY, August 31 — The Israeli military claimed on Sunday that it had killed Abu Obeida, the longtime spokesman for Hamas’s armed wing, in an attack on Gaza City, as it prepares to take over the area despite international calls for a ceasefire.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the announcement came as Israeli forces launched an attack on the Rimal neighborhood, targeting what three Israeli officials anonymously identified as Abu Obeida. “Abu Obeida had threatened in a statement carried in official Hamas news media on Friday that Israel would ‘pay the price’ with ‘its soldiers’ blood’ if it sought to conquer Gaza City,” reported the New York Times. Hamas has not commented on the claim, and the Palestinian Civil Defense said at least five people were killed in the strike.

The Israeli campaign has killed over 60,000 people in Gaza, including thousands of children, according to local health officials who do not distinguish between civilians and combatants. A U.N.-backed panel recently declared famine in Gaza City amid aid restrictions, a characterization Israel disputes. The operation follows the killings of key Hamas figures like Yahya Sinwar, Ismail Haniyeh, and Muhammad Deif since the October 2023 attack that killed about 1,200 in Israel and took 250 hostages.

Mediation efforts continue, with fears of further displacement for Gaza’s two million people. The Israeli military said Abu Obeida was involved in propaganda videos featuring hostages, which human rights groups call a war crime.
