TIANJIN, August 31 — Chinese President Xi Jinping, during talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tianjin on Sunday, urged New Delhi and Beijing to “remain friends” and foster good neighbourly ties, proposing that the “dragon and the elephant can dance together” for mutual success.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, Xi emphasized the shared role of India and China as key members of the Global South during his opening remarks, as reported by news agency IANS. He stated, “The world today is swept by once-in-a-century transformations. China and India are two ancient civilizations in the East… We both shoulder the historical responsibility of improving the well-being of our two peoples, promoting the solidarity and rejuvenation of developing countries, and promoting the progress of human society.” He advocated for the two nations to be partners in each other’s success, upholding multilateralism, and contributing to a multipolar world and peace in Asia and beyond.
Highlighting the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2025, Xi urged both sides to approach bilateral relations with a “strategic height and long-term perspective” to ensure sustained, sound development. PM Modi, earlier in the day, echoed the sentiment, stating that India-China cooperation could benefit “the entire humanity” and reaffirmed New Delhi’s commitment to advancing ties based on mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity. He also congratulated Xi on assuming the SCO Chairmanship.
The meeting marks a significant step forward, following a breakthrough agreement on patrolling protocols along the 3,500-km Line of Actual Control (LAC), which ended a four-year border standoff. The last engagement between the leaders occurred during the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, in 2024.
