Aftershocks Continue to Rattle Afghanistan Following Deadly Earthquake

Kunar, Afghanistan – A series of aftershocks, including a magnitude 5.8 tremor, continued to strike eastern Afghanistan on Thursday night and Friday, September 5, 2025, following a devastating magnitude 6.3 earthquake on Sunday that killed over 2,200 people, according to data from the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), Government of India, and reports by The Chenab Times.

The aftershocks, ranging from 3.8 to 5.8 in magnitude, have compounded the challenges faced by rescue teams in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces, where the initial quake caused widespread destruction. The NCS recorded significant aftershocks in Afghanistan, including a magnitude 5.8 event on September 4 at 22:26:29 IST (reported as 6.3 by the German Research Centre for Geosciences), a magnitude 4.9 tremor on September 5 at 03:16:43 IST, and a magnitude 5.2 quake on September 5 at 07:00:06 IST. Tremors from the Thursday night quake were felt as far as Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi-NCR, as per information available with The Chenab Times.

The Chenab Times previously reported a death toll of 1,467, which has risen to 2,205, with at least 3,640 injured and over 6,700 homes destroyed, as per Taliban authorities. The initial magnitude 6.3 quake on September 1 at 00:47:41 IST, striking at a shallow depth of 10 km, caused extensive damage in Kunar, flattening villages and triggering landslides. A subsequent magnitude 5.5 quake on Tuesday further hampered rescue efforts by blocking roads in remote areas.

Rescue operations, supported by helicopters and ground teams, persist despite difficult terrain. The NCS data confirms multiple aftershocks in Afghanistan, including seven events on September 1 ranging from 4.2 to 5.0 in magnitude, and additional tremors on September 3 and 4, with magnitudes up to 5.3. These aftershocks have heightened fears among survivors, many of whom remain displaced and are reluctant to leave until loved ones’ bodies are recovered from the rubble.
