Floods Damage 110 km of Indo-Pak Border Fence, Inundate 90 BSF Posts in Punjab and Jammu

CHANDIGARH, Sept 5 — Severe flooding has damaged approximately 110 km of the India-Pakistan international border fence and inundated around 90 Border Security Force (BSF) posts in Punjab and Jammu, significantly altering the border landscape. The damage includes about 80 km of fencing in Punjab and 30 km in Jammu, with sections submerged, uprooted, or tilted, according to details received by The Chenab Times.

The floods, intensified by water crossing from Pakistan and damaging embankments, have led to breaches in bundhs across districts like Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Pathankot, Taran Taran, Ferozepur, and Fazilka in Punjab, inundating 65 BSF posts, while 20 posts are affected in Jammu. In Shahzada village, Amritsar, residents have sought refuge in the BSF’s Kamalpur post after soldiers vacated due to rising waters. Similarly, the BSF post near the Kartarpur Corridor is flooded, prompting personnel to relocate to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Dera Baba Nanak.

“The Ravi river has flooded both sides of the zero line, forcing Pakistan Rangers to abandon their forward posts as well,” an official noted, as per The New Indian Express. Several forward defence points and observation posts have also been impacted. The BSF has launched a restoration exercise to repair the fence and outposts, with troops on high alert. The force is using motorboats, surveillance drones, large searchlights, and electronic monitoring to secure the border, especially where fencing is submerged. “The BSF will be back on their points soon as the water is receding,” an official added.

The Sutluj River has inundated the joint check post at Hussainiwala, leading to the indefinite cancellation of the Beating the Retreat ceremony, with the access road severely damaged. Over the past ten days, BSF has thwarted multiple drug smuggling attempts, seizing significant heroin quantities and capturing a man trying to swim to Pakistan near Pachharian outpost.

Despite their own challenges, BSF troopers are aiding flood-affected villagers with rescue operations using speedboats. Tragically, a BSF jawan drowned in floodwaters in Jammu a few days ago.
