Kashmir Apple Growers Protest Highway Closure, Risking Rs 10,000 Crore in Produce

SRINAGAR, Sept 16 — Apple growers and traders in Kashmir staged protests in Sopore town of Baramulla district and Handwara area of Kupwara district against the prolonged closure of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, citing government inaction that threatens produce worth over Rs 10,000 crore. Fruit mandis across the Valley observed a two-day shutdown to highlight the issue, as the highway has remained largely inaccessible for four weeks, according to details received by The Chenab Times.

In Kulgam, Zahoor Ahmad, state president of the Apple Farmers’ Federation, urged the government to arrange transport for apple-laden vehicles. “A streamlined and efficient system will prevent delays and financial losses,” he said, as reported by PTI. Ahmad emphasized that horticulture forms the backbone of Kashmir’s economy, adding, “Due to transportation problem, we are incurring losses in crores of rupees. Apple is a perishable fruit and timely delivery is critical for preserving the quality and getting a reasonable price for the produce.”

On Monday, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha launched a cargo parcel train service at Nowgam to transport apples from Kashmir to Delhi, capable of carrying 23-24 tonnes daily. A delegation from the Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers-cum-Dealers’ Union, led by Chairman Bashir Ahmad Basheer, met Sinha and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Lieutenant Governor for the Budgam to Adarsh Nagar service. Sinha assured the group that steps would be taken to address their concerns.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah addressed the issue on X, stating he had spoken with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. “The frustration of fruit growers is understandable. They have been very patient for the first few days but watching their hard work rot because @nhidcl is unable to stabilise the highway, their patience has worn thin & that is totally understandable,” Abdullah posted. He noted that concrete steps would be taken within 24 hours but withheld details until implemented.
