NEW DELHI — Journalists Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, Ravi Nair, Abir Dasgupta, Ayaskant Das, and Ayush Joshi have moved a Delhi district court challenging an ex-parte interim order that restrained them from publishing reports on the Adani Group, according to details received by The Chenab Times.
The appeals contest the September 6, 2025, order by Special Civil Judge Anuj Kumar Singh at Rohini Courts, who prima facie found the published reports defamatory and unverified, Live Law reported. The injunction, granted in favor of Adani Enterprises Limited, also targeted websites pranjoy.in, adaniwatch.org, and adanifiles.com.au.
The court observed a prima facie case for Adani, stating the balance of convenience favored it, as continued publication or sharing could tarnish its image and lead to a media trial. It directed the defendants to remove defamatory material from articles, social media posts, or tweets within five days, and alerted intermediaries under Rule 3 of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, to disable access within 36 hours.
Adani’s suit alleged the defendants operated “agenda-driven” websites, publishing baseless content against the group and its chairman, shared widely on social media and other platforms, harming operations, driving away investors, and creating market panic. The court clarified the restraint applies only to unverified and defamatory material, not verified reporting.
The district court listed the appeals for hearing on September 18, 2025. Thakurta, facing his seventh defamation suit from Adani, stated he will contest the claims, affirming his reporting is truthful and in the public interest, as reported by The Wire on September 9, 2025. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued takedown notices to platforms like YouTube and Instagram for 138 videos and 83 posts, including those by Thakurta and others, on September 16, 2025, citing the order, The News Minute reported.
