BARAMULLA — A massive fire broke out in the congested Old Baramulla town during the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, damaging multiple residential houses and shops, according to details received by The Chenab Times.
The blaze was reported at around 12:40 a.m. when flames erupted in two adjoining residential-cum-commercial buildings, one three-storied and the other two-storied, both roofed with galvanized corrugated iron sheets, officials said, as reported by KNT. The fire spread quickly to nearby structures, causing panic among locals.
Fire and Emergency Services personnel arrived and controlled the blaze after intense efforts. At least three residential houses and two shops suffered significant damage. An official noted that both initial buildings were concrete constructions. “The intensity of the fire was high, but timely intervention prevented it from spreading to more structures,” the official said.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes, with locals using buckets of water to assist firefighters. “People were rushing with buckets of water while firefighters battled the fire with their equipment. It was frightening as the flames were leaping into the sky,” a local witness said.
No casualties were reported, though property loss is extensive. Authorities have begun assessing damages, and police are investigating the cause. Affected families received temporary relief and were shifted to safer accommodations.
