BJP Urges J&K Govt to Regularize Colonies, Enforce Scientific Planning

JAMMU — Jammu and Kashmir Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokespersons Hari Dutt Shishu and Zorawar Singh Jamwal on Thursday called on the National Conference government to urgently regularize established colonies and ensure new developments adhere to scientific and environmental norms, according to details received by The Chenab Times.

During a press conference at the party headquarters in Trikuta Nagar, attended by media incharge Pardeep Mahotra, Shishu highlighted the massive loss of lives and property from recent torrential rains, cloudbursts, illegal mining, and increased vulnerability to natural disasters. He linked the growing population and rural-to-urban migration to heightened risks amid changing climate patterns, flash floods, landslides, and seismic activity.

“The people residing in long-established but unrecognized colonies are living in uncertainty. The government must take immediate action to regularize these settlements, many of which have existed for decades. At the same time, future planning must be guided by disaster management protocols and sustainable urban development models,” Shishu said.

He urged a housing needs survey and prioritized the proposed Town Planning Scheme (TPS) alongside the Ring Road from Akhnoor Road to Kot Bhalwal to address Jammu city’s rising housing demands.

Jamwal emphasized coordination between the Housing and Urban Development Department and District Development Commissioners to assess vulnerable colonies, advocating for regularisation with basic amenities like water supply, drainage, waste management, electricity, and road connectivity. He called for involving urban planners, geologists, and disaster management experts in designating new residential areas.

“Proper planning today will save lives tomorrow. It is not just about housing, but about building a safer and more resilient Jammu and Kashmir,” Jamwal said, reaffirming BJP’s commitment to PM Modi’s ‘Housing for All’ vision through democratic platforms.
