Doda, October 15 — Today marks the 94th birth anniversary of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. Rising from modest beginnings, he became one of India’s most admired scientists and the 11th President of the Republic. Revered as the Missile Man of India, Dr. Kalam’s life embodied dedication, intellect, and humility.
Educated in aeronautical engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology, Dr. Kalam joined the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in 1958 and later the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), where he led the project that launched India’s first indigenous satellite launch vehicle, SLV-III. Its successful deployment of the Rohini satellite in 1980 marked a milestone in India’s space journey.
Returning to DRDO in 1982, he initiated the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, which produced the Agni and Prithvi missiles—symbols of India’s technological confidence. As Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister, he played a pivotal role in the 1998 Pokhran-II nuclear tests, which established India as a nuclear power.
Beyond science, Dr. Kalam envisioned a nation driven by innovation and equity. His Technology Vision 2020 outlined a roadmap for transforming India into a developed nation through advancements in agriculture, education, and healthcare.
Elected President in 2002 with rare bipartisan support, he earned the title People’s President for his simplicity and deep rapport with citizens, especially the youth. After his term ended in 2007, he returned to academia, teaching and inspiring students across the country.
A prolific writer, his works—Wings of Fire, Ignited Minds, and India 2020—continue to motivate young Indians toward purpose and service. Among his many honours were the Padma Bhushan (1981), Padma Vibhushan (1990), and Bharat Ratna (1997).
Dr. Kalam passed away on July 27, 2015, while addressing students at IIM Shillong—a fitting end for a man whose final breath was spent in pursuit of knowledge. His life remains a lasting reminder that dreams, when fuelled by hard work and faith, can lift an entire nation.
