Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI has released Grokipedia, an online encyclopedia positioned as a less biased option to Wikipedia, featuring over 885,000 articles generated by AI.
The platform went live on October 27 after a brief outage due to high traffic, according to reports from multiple outlets. The Chenab Times reported earlier that the launch faced delays last week to address content issues. Grokipedia aims to provide objective information by rewriting sources like Wikipedia entries, removing perceived falsehoods and adding context, as described in announcements from xAI.
Musk, who has repeatedly criticized Wikipedia for alleged left-leaning bias, announced the project in late September on X, formerly Twitter. “We are building Grokipedia @xAI. Will be a massive improvement over Wikipedia. Frankly, it is a necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe,” he stated in a post. The site is available to the public with no usage limits and is intended as an open-source knowledge base for both humans and AI systems.
Initial reviews note that some articles closely resemble Wikipedia pages, adapted through AI processes. xAI plans to incorporate user feedback to refine the early beta version, with a more stable release expected soon.
No additional details on expansion or integration with xAI’s Grok chatbot were immediately available.
Grokipedia stems from xAI’s mission to advance truth-seeking artificial intelligence, with the platform designed to include real-time AI analysis for content verification and bias detection. Contributors are invited to develop articles on topics ranging from science to current events, according to details received by The Chenab Times. A temporary site at grokipedia.fun has served as a hub for early input, while the full version, now live on Grokipedia.com, emphasizes multimedia embedding and cross-referenced citations.
The project encountered a postponement earlier in the month. On October 20, Musk posted on X: “Postponing Grokipedia v0.1 launch to end of week. We need to do more work to purge out the propaganda.” This delay aligned with efforts to ensure quality before the October 27 rollout.
Observers have drawn comparisons to Conservapedia, a 2006 encyclopedia founded by Andrew Schlafly in response to perceived liberal biases in Wikipedia. Conservapedia, which maintains around 60,000 entries with a focus on conservative perspectives, relies on human edits by a vetted community. In contrast, Grokipedia employs AI augmentation through xAI’s Grok model alongside human oversight, targeting broader coverage without explicit ideological guidelines, as outlined in project descriptions.
Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger, a frequent critic of the platform’s editorial shifts, has expressed support for Grokipedia. He described it as a potential catalyst for reforms in online knowledge sharing, according to recent reports.
Discussions on X highlight user interest in Grokipedia’s potential for fields like technology and cryptocurrency, though concerns remain about AI’s ability to fully eliminate biases inherited from training data. xAI has not released further specifics on governance structures for content moderation.
