Puducherry TVK Rally: Permission Granted with Strict Conditions, Entry Restricted to Locals Only

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) will hold a public meeting at Uppalam Helipad Ground on December 9, with attendance limited to residents of the Union Territory. The event marks the party’s first major outdoor rally since a deadly stampede in Karur, Tamil Nadu, earlier in the year.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the meeting, scheduled from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, will feature TVK chief and actor Vijay as the main speaker. The party initially sought approval for a roadshow on December 5, which authorities denied due to concerns over narrow roads and crowd management. TVK then applied for the public meeting, receiving conditional permission after discussions with police officials and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy.

Maalai Malar reported that preparations are underway, including arrangements for public amenities. However, the Puducherry Police have imposed stringent guidelines to ensure safety. Attendance is capped at 5,000 participants, divided into enclosures of 500 each. Entry requires valid passes issued exclusively to Puducherry residents; individuals from Tamil Nadu or other states will not be permitted. Vulnerable groups, including children, pregnant women, and the elderly, are barred from attending. The event must conclude by 12:30 PM, with organizers required to provide drinking water, washrooms, and emergency medical services. QR-coded passes will regulate entry to prevent overcrowding.

The restrictions stem from the September 27 Karur incident, where 41 people died in a stampede at a TVK event, leading to a ban on outdoor gatherings for the party in Tamil Nadu. Authorities there now limit events to indoor meetings with strict caps, such as 2,000 attendees in Kancheepuram last month. The Hindu noted that police are preparing detailed protocols, emphasizing cooperation from the public on traffic and safety instructions.

NDTV reported that the local-only entry condition aligns with TVK’s own request to manage crowds, given Vijay’s large following. Dynamite News highlighted the police advisory urging adherence to guidelines for a smooth conduct. Mathrubhumi confirmed the 5,000-person limit and focus on preventive measures.
