A Rajya Sabha committee has recommended that the Ministry of Home Affairs expedite the process to grant statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, fulfilling a promise made by the union government in 2019 during the region’s bifurcation into two union territories.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the Rajya Sabha Committee on Government Assurances, headed by AIADMK MP M Thambidurai, made the suggestion in a report tabled during the Winter Session of Parliament. Deccan Herald reported that the panel examined an unstarred question from July 27, 2022, on the statehood issue.
The committee discussed the matter with Jammu and Kashmir government and MHA representatives during a study visit to Srinagar on July 13, 2024. News agency PTI noted that the MHA informed the panel the issue is under examination at the appropriate level, with a decision expected soon.
An implementation report from August 2023 was treated as partial fulfillment, as statehood depends on multiple factors. The panel emphasized it is incumbent on authorities to fulfil the 2019 assurance.
No timeline was specified in the report. MHA representatives reiterated the matter’s ongoing review. The recommendation aligns with calls from political parties and civil society for restoring full state status post-Article 370 abrogation.
