Sharjeel Imam has said he remains optimistic about his case after the Supreme Court declined to grant bail to him and Umar Khalid, calling the ruling an attack on organised democratic protest.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, Sharjeel Imam has reacted to the Supreme Court’s decision denying bail to him and Umar Khalid, stating that the judgment criminalises organised protest and blurs the distinction between democratic dissent and terrorism.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Imam’s remarks were shared publicly through a note posted on X by Muzammil Imam following the court’s ruling. In the statement, Sharjeel Imam said he was “very happy” that other accused persons had been granted bail, even as he condemned what he described as the injustice faced by those who remained incarcerated for a long period.
Imam said he believes that he and Umar Khalid are being punished for organising and spearheading what he termed one of the most important mass protests in recent Indian history. He said the judgment treats disruption as a terrorist act and, in his view, criminalises organised protest. According to him, this further blurs the distinction between terrorist activity and democratic protest and dissent.
On a personal note, Imam said his primary concern is the physical and mental health of his elderly mother. Apart from that, he said he remains optimistic about the case and believes that the truth will ultimately prevail.
Imam also said he continues to pursue his intellectual and academic journey to the extent possible while in custody. He concluded his note with a couplet reflecting endurance and hope despite prolonged hardship.
The Supreme Court order denying bail to Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid forms part of ongoing legal proceedings related to protest-linked cases.
