Haryana Village Mourns Army Jawan Mohit Sharma, Killed in J&K’s Doda Road Accident; Last Rites Performed with Full State Honours

The last rites of Army jawan Mohit Sharma, who lost his life in a road accident in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district, were performed with full state honours in his native village Gijarod in Haryana’s Jhajjar district.

The cremation took place amid profound grief, with thousands of villagers, family members, Army personnel, and local authorities in attendance. Mohit Sharma’s younger brother lit the pyre as a ceremonial salute was accorded by Army personnel. Mourners raised slogans of “Mohit Sharma Amar Rahe” during the funeral procession, while the atmosphere in the village remained sombre as residents paid their final tributes to the fallen soldier.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the mortal remains of Mohit Sharma arrived in Gijarod wrapped in the national flag, with vehicles draped in the Tricolour and people walking alongside in honour. The vehicle accident occurred on Thursday when an Army armoured troop carrier skidded off a narrow mountain road on the Bhadarwah-Chamba route and plunged nearly 400 feet into a gorge. Ten soldiers, including Mohit Sharma, were killed in the mishap, while 11 others were injured and airlifted for treatment to military hospitals. Official sources attributed the accident to slippery road conditions caused by snow, which led to the driver losing control of the vehicle carrying 21 personnel from Doda towards an upper post.

The Bhadarwah-Chamba road, which connects Jammu and Kashmir with Himachal Pradesh, features high mountains, deep gorges, sharp bends, and narrow stretches, making it particularly hazardous during winter snowfall. Mohit Sharma, a resident of Gijarod village in Jhajjar, had joined the Indian Army five years ago and was serving as a constable. He had married about a year earlier. News of his death spread sorrow across the village, where family members and locals recalled him as a dedicated soldier.

Tributes continued to pour in from various quarters. Students and staff of Sant Ishwariye Bhartiya Vidya Mandir in Nainsu, Udhampur, lit candles and offered prayers for the departed soldiers and the speedy recovery of the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep anguish over the incident on X, stating that the nation would always remember the service of the brave personnel lost in the mishap. He conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a swift recovery, adding that all possible support was being extended to those affected.
