The Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board has extended the application deadline for constable positions in the union territory’s police force, providing additional time for aspiring candidates amid technical concerns.
The Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board announced an extension in the last date for submitting online applications for divisional cadre posts of executive constables in the Jammu and Kashmir Police under the Home Department. The new deadline is now set for February 27, 2026, moving it forward from the original date of February 17, 2026.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the board received multiple representations from candidates highlighting difficulties in accessing the application portal, prompting the decision to allow more time for submissions.
The recruitment drive, advertised through Notification No. 12 of 2025 dated December 24, 2025, aims to fill 1,815 vacancies for executive constable positions across the Jammu and Kashmir divisions. As per the official notification from the Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board, the posts are distributed under the divisional cadre system, which allocates positions separately for the Jammu division in the southern part of the union territory and the Kashmir division in the north. This structure ensures balanced representation from both regions, which together form the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, located in northern India bordering Pakistan and China.
Eligibility criteria, as outlined in the board’s notification, require candidates to be domiciles of Jammu and Kashmir and to have completed at least Class 10 from a recognized educational institution. Applicants must also meet physical standards, including minimum height requirements of 5 feet 6 inches for males and 5 feet 2 inches for females, with relaxations for certain categories such as those from scheduled tribes. The age limit is set between 18 and 28 years as of January 1, 2025, with extensions for reserved categories in line with government rules.
The application process began on January 19, 2026, through the official website of the Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board at jkssb.nic.in. Candidates are required to pay a fee of Rs 700 online, with exemptions for scheduled caste and scheduled tribe applicants. The board has advised aspirants to submit their forms well before the extended deadline to avoid potential server overloads or connectivity issues, which have been reported in recent days.
Press Trust of India reported that the extension comes in response to widespread complaints about the website’s functionality, particularly on the final days approaching the original cutoff. Candidates from remote areas in the Kashmir Valley, including districts like Kupwara and Baramulla, as well as those in Jammu’s hilly terrains such as Rajouri and Poonch, have faced challenges due to intermittent internet access and high traffic on the portal.
The selection process involves a written examination, physical endurance test, and medical evaluation, as detailed in the notification. The written test will cover topics such as general knowledge, reasoning, and basic mathematics, with a focus on objective-type questions. Successful candidates will undergo training at designated police academies in the union territory.
This recruitment is part of broader efforts by the Jammu and Kashmir administration to strengthen law enforcement amid ongoing security concerns in the region. The Home Department, overseeing the police force, has emphasized the need for a robust cadre to maintain public order. Agence France-Presse noted that similar drives in the past have attracted thousands of applicants, reflecting high youth unemployment rates in the area, which stands at around 18 percent according to recent government surveys.
Officials from the board have distributed the notice to various departments, including the Director General of Police and divisional commissioners, for wider dissemination through local media and radio bulletins. The extension is expected to benefit thousands of eligible youth, ensuring a fair opportunity for all.
