Jammu and Kashmir: Excavator Seized in Awantipora for Illegal Mining

Illegal Mining Drive Intensifies in Awantipora

In a significant move to curb illicit extraction activities, Jammu and Kashmir Police have seized an excavator involved in illegal mining in the Green Land Woyen area of Awantipora. The operation is part of an ongoing intensified drive against such unlawful practices across the region.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, a police party from Police Station Khrew, led by the Station House Officer, detected the illegal mining operations during routine patrolling. The prompt action by the police team resulted in the immediate seizure of a Larsen & Toubro (L&T) machine, an excavator, which was actively being used for the unlawful extraction of minerals.

Following the seizure, a case has been registered at Police Station Khrew under FIR No. 25/2026, invoking relevant sections of the law. An investigation into the matter has been initiated to ascertain the full extent of the illegal operations and identify all individuals involved.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have reiterated their firm commitment to taking stringent action against all forms of illegal mining. Authorities are urging the general public to extend their cooperation by reporting any such suspicious or unlawful activities observed in their vicinity. This appeal for public assistance underscores the collaborative approach required to protect natural resources and uphold environmental regulations.

The Awantipora region, like many parts of Jammu and Kashmir, has been a focus of efforts to prevent environmental degradation caused by unregulated resource extraction. Previous operations have also targeted sand mining and stone quarrying in various districts, highlighting a sustained commitment from law enforcement to safeguard the region’s ecological balance and revenue streams.

Illegal mining poses a dual threat: it damages the environment by causing soil erosion, altering riverbeds, and impacting biodiversity, while also depriving the government of substantial revenue. The Jammu and Kashmir administration has been implementing stricter monitoring mechanisms and enforcement measures to combat this pervasive issue. This includes leveraging technology for surveillance and empowering local authorities to take swift action against offenders.

The successful seizure in Awantipora serves as a warning to those engaged in illegal mining activities. Officials have indicated that such operations will continue with increased frequency and intensity, demonstrating a zero-tolerance policy towards those who disregard environmental laws and engage in activities detrimental to public interest and natural resources. The investigation aims to uncover the network behind these operations and ensure accountability.
