Jammu, March 31: Jammu police have apprehended an individual who was wanted in a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and had been evading law enforcement for the past seven years.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the accused, identified as Sunil Bhagat, originally from Juddi in the Doda district and presently residing in Bari Brahmana, was a fugitive for a significant period. The arrest marks a culmination of sustained efforts by the police to bring him to justice.
According to police statements, Bhagat was a wanted suspect in connection with FIR No. 123/2019. The case, registered at Police Station Janipur, involves serious charges under Sections 376 (rape), 109 (abetment), and 363 (kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code, alongside Sections 3 and 4 of the POCSO Act, which addresses sexual offenses against children.
The prolonged period of abscondence indicated the accused’s determination to evade arrest. Police officials reported that the apprehension followed the receipt of specific intelligence, which enabled them to locate and subsequently arrest Bhagat. The operation underscores the police’s commitment to pursuing fugitives, regardless of the duration of their evasion.
The arrest is part of ongoing efforts by the Jammu and Kashmir Police to address and resolve pending criminal cases, particularly those involving grave offenses like those under the POCSO Act. Authorities have emphasized the importance of bringing such accused individuals to trial to ensure justice for victims and uphold the rule of law.
